Homer Halibut Fishing Tides “Halibut Fishing Capitol of Alaska”.

Being in the right place at the right time is perhaps the most important part of a successful halibut fishing trip. One important part of a successful trip is the degree of change that occurs from the daily high tides to the low tides that result in the strong currents the fishermen must deal with. During a halibut fishing trip, fishing is more productive when there is a small swing in tides resulting from the least difference between the mean high tides and the mean low tides. Although halibut are caught during all forms of tide shifts, this is the most preferable scenario. Are you fishing where the fish are? YES. Homer is so full of these flatfish it's pathetic yet on some days you would think it’s some sort of Halibut Holiday. This scenario is not a common one if you choose a highly reputable and knowledgeable halibut charter and you understand the tides you are contending with. Homer Fishing Charters live off their reputations of being able to put their clients in the position to fulfill their dreams and freezers. For this reason you can rest assured that every charter company will work hard to get you your fish on any given day or tide.

About Homer Fishing Charters;

  • Halibut fishing is very hot this year yet many of the charters are leaving the docks with fewer fishermen on board. If your in Homer this week, check with the charter offices for opening and cancellations that are available. Neither the fishing or the charter will let you down.
  • Lingcod season opened July 1. Minimum size is 35 inches with a limit of 2 Lingcod per day and 2 in possession.
  • After your Homer Fishing Charter concludes, please remember those that make your trip so enjoyable. A 15% - 20% tipping of deckhands is customary.

Homer Clam Tides - See Homer Clamming Tides listed here in the Spring.

Those partaking in the enjoyment of steamer clam digging in Homer or Kachemak Bay also need to confirm the current tides before heading to the beaches. Here is where you want to see a large swing from the highs to lows resulting in what is referred to as the minus tides that the clam digger needs where the sea level recedes beyond the mean low tide mark.

Thoughts To Ponder.

One Halibut Limit? What the heck is this? In a 10 to 1 vote, the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council has approved a plan to allocate the halibut catch in two of Alaska’s most popular fishing regions between the commercial and charter fishing fleets. But it’s not just a simple you get X% and you get Y%, nope the have come up with another complicated formula that the pore ole local boy has to try to make some heads or tails out of. Have you read about it? Did you agree with it? If you missed the October 8th Homer tribune article, you need to take some time to read it and try to get a handle on what will be going on with the Homer halibut charter fishing for next year if your like most Alaskans that use these businesses to fill your freezer with the Halibut most of us can't afford to by in the stores. But "One Halibut" Yikes. This article in the Homer Tribune, written by Naomi Klouda, brings up some very interesting thoughts to ponder.

Cook Inlet Beluga whale placed on endangered species list.
The federal government has acknowledged that the beluga whale in Cook Inlet is indeed endangered and will require additional protection to survive. This necessitated the placing of the Cook Inlet Beluga on the Federal Endangered Species List.

Excerpt from an email we received from an Anchorage Resident. October 27, 2008
The findings by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration directly conflict with the claims voiced by Gov. Sarah Palin, who seems to question all of the scientific evidence that the beluga whale population in the waters of Cook Inlet are still declining, despite a decade-long recovery effort.

First the polar bear now the Beluga, Palin probably never thought the American Bald Eagle should have been on the list either. She's not going to go down in history as the world's greatest conservationist. Maybe she would be best off if she stayed with Drill Baby Drill and left the areas of protecting the fragile ecosystems to those with the proper training and lack of campaign donations that need to be repaid.

Made in China

Chinese made products from baby foods to chocolate bars have accounted for more than 60 percent of all recalls during 2008. Was it wise to export our better paying production jobs to China just to replace them with low paying jobs from outlets like Walmart? Even with the mass recalls of Chinese products during 2007, the 2008 U.S. trade deficit with China is on a pace to exceed the previous year record.
